A new locally produced drama series titled Sobonana is set to premiere on Netflix on 26 April, according to creator and producer Emmanuel Sigebe. The official time slot has not yet been confirmed.

Sigebe, who is based in Olievenhoutbosch and originally from Domboni village in Thohoyandou, described the series as a romantic comedy-drama with a strong educational message. The word Sobonana, meaning “coming together” in isiZulu, reflects the heart of the storyline — unity, relationships and community.

Speaking to Cosmo City Chronicle, Sigebe shared that the journey to bring the production to life has taken years of dedication, research and persistence.

“I’ve always had a passion for producing and creating content since my secondary school days,” he said. “Relocating to Johannesburg and conducting extensive research helped shape the vision for Sobonana.”

The series features established television talent, including Chwayita Myekiso, who plays the role of Queen Gogo — a wealthy yet controversial gangster character marked by betrayal and power. Myekiso has previously appeared in a Hollard advertisement and the multi-award-winning soapie Generations: The Legacy as a supporting cast member.

Sigebe said the goal is to grow Sobonana into a household name.

“We are just getting started. The plan is to push beyond boundaries and build a remarkable legacy in the entertainment space,” he explained. “This season explores life inside the house of Sobonana, touching on daily hardships, evolving gangsterism in townships, and romance.”

He added that the series aims to tell authentic African stories that resonate with audiences while mentoring and empowering emerging talent.

“Sobonana is more than just a TV series. It’s about acknowledging and uplifting upcoming stars,” Sigebe said.

However, the journey has not been without challenges. Sigebe revealed that securing a broadcasting platform was one of the most difficult hurdles.

“We approached different TV stations for years without success. Facing rejection was painful, but it made us stronger,” he said.

The producer also highlighted the financial demands of filming, especially when shooting in multiple locations.

“Production requires financial stability. Without sponsorship, teamwork and dedication, it would not have been possible,” he noted, adding that independent producers often face significant obstacles in sustaining long-term projects.

Despite the challenges, Sigebe encouraged young creatives to pursue their dreams relentlessly.

“Turn your passion into purpose. Achievement is possible when you keep going,” he said. “I dedicate this work to the community.”

He extended gratitude to sponsors who supported the production, including Folang Guest Manor, Regional Funeral Service, Te Amo Clothing Brand and Cosmo FM.

“We sincerely appreciate the support from our sponsors and community members,” he concluded.
